Ode To The Smokester

I’ve been meaning to post on how Smokey is doing since coming into our lives at the beginning of May.

She had a vet appointment over Memorial Day weekend for a checkup and also for her final distemper shot.  She luckily didn’t have any reaction to the vaccine which is common in ferrets.  We noticed that sometimes when she was really playing, that her hind leg would give out on her and her hind quarters would fall to one side.  The vet checked this out and it appears that she has an old injury to one of her hind feet.  It doesn’t seem to be hurting her though which is a good thing.

She was pretty subdued when I first brought her home.  She wasn’t used to kisses and cuddles at first but now will climb up to wherever I’m at to receive them.  I am always willing, too.  Where she came from a shelter and then previous to that, a home where the owner no longer had time for her, I don’t think she got a lot of attention.

I really couldn’t ask for a better pet.  She uses her litter box pretty consistently and has had few accidents.  She’s pretty low key and easy going.  Hubby seems to be taking a liking to her as well which is a huge plus.  While reading on Sunday in my room, Hubby walked by the door and was completely unaware that he was being followed by a weasel who was dancing behind him as if she were dodging fire crackers.  He walked by again and there she was dancing and bouncing behind him still.  How could I not laugh at that?

Smokescreen

In short, she has been a complete joy.  We’ve already made up nick-names for her like Smokes, Smokey-dokes and of course The Smokester (poor thing).

I’m looking forward to taking her camping this year among other things.  Her shelter does fund raisers in the Fall so I plan on taking her down to Tucson to mingle with other ferret parents.

It’s been neat to watch this little ferret really come alive.  I don’t think she ever really knew what it was like to be a much loved and spoiled little house pet.  Luckily for her she’ll never know anything different from here on out.

  1. LMAO at ‘Smokescreen’. I am guessing all she’ll ever react to is ‘smoke’ and then you can call her about everything you want. I was never in doubt that she won the ferret lottery when you picked her to bring her home 😉

  2. So cute feel happy for you ..

  3. Aww.. I’m so happy to hear your ferret is doing well. Ferrets are so energetic and sociable and crave attention from their humans. Enjoy your ferret! 🙂

  4. I’m so glad that she’s doing so well and that your husband has come around from his initial reluctance to have her. Love the smokescreen photo!

    • Yes, it is a relief that he has gotten used to her. She seems to adore him. That is actually the first photo of Smokey that I have where she is actually not moving her head. She is constantly in motion except for when asleep.

  5. Oh! She sounds so cute!!! I once wanted a ferret. I tried to convince my parents but they were a no-go for it. LOL! Now that I’m semi-independent, my apartments won’t allow it! Darn. XD

    • Well maybe in the future you’ll be able to get one. I had to hide the two that I had when living in an apartment back in the 1990s. Thankfully I never got caught but it’s not a good position to be in.

  6. I’m so glad she found you, and that she’s doing so well. She’s such a cutie : )!

  7. I also like the wraparound windows in the kitchen and the colour of the walls!

    • Oh, thank you! It gets so warm in there with the windows facing the rising sun but it is always a bright sunny room to be in. I had painted the kitchen that color back over last Thanksgiving. It took awhile for it to grow on me but I think I like it.

      • I am still wanting to paint my kitchen but the thought of that much work right now with everything else is too much. It is boring white. I envy you the windows with the sun coming up! Such amazing sun rises and sun sets there.

        • I hear you! There are other walls that need to be painted and I need to also recarpet the guest bedroom. So much work.

The sky here is beautiful during the early morning hours. Sometimes in the evening the sky appears to be on fire. Don’t envy us too much. It’s going to be 113 here tomorrow. 😉

  8. I was wondering about her! And meant to ask how she is getting on. I am so glad you posted this. HOw funny she is! And clever picking on your husband like that. It is so nice when they come out of their shell once they know they can trust us and they are safe and loved. Big smiles over here!
Your hair looks so nice, by the way.

    • Yeah, she is doing great. Its amazing how much a little creature will respond to even just a little bit of love and care, isn’t it? It just cracked me up that day was behind him. He had no idea either which is what made it funnier. Too bad I didn’t have a video camera. Thanks for the compliment on my hair. I’ve been introduced to a flat iron this year.

  9. That’s awesome. I’ve been wondering how she’s been doing.

  10. Yay! What a lucky creature. I love the name “Smokey-dokes,” too!

I’m so so glad she’s settled in so well and that she and hubby are getting along. Hope it all continues to run smoothly 🙂

  12. Love how Hubby has come round. Thats how my Dad was with the variety of cats my mother had collected over the years. They are down to one now…”the prince of darkness”.

She is almost cute, though I do not think I will become a ferret owner ever!

    • Is that really the cat’s name? LOL.

It’s funny, back in 1996 I had a boyfriend who wanted a pet. Ferrets had been legalized in MA for only a year at that point so the pet stores were just starting to get them. My boyfriend fell in love with this one ferret and had to have him. We lived together so I wasn’t too keen on this ‘wild animal’ being in the house. Little did I know that I would fall head over heals for this little creature. When the relationship ended the ferret stayed and I have had a ferret consistently in my life since then (minus the three weeks after Monsoon passed). I guess I find them incredibly cute and they have the sweetest little personalities as well. But, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 😉
